Strategic Energy MOU's | Hospitals, NStar & National Grid create strategic MOU's to improve energy efficiency Spurred by mandated, aggressive energy efficiency goals, NStar & National Grid are actively working to establish customized, 2-3 year, strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with large C&I customers. A National Grid MOU, for example, outlines a collaborative partnership including: - Jointly agreed upon energy savings goals and investment targets, with a fixed pre-determined unit incentive amount
- A financial model that enables reinvestment
- Collaboratively developed strategic energy plan
- Implementation of a benchmarking process
- Comprehensive Support: Financial, Technical & Operational, based on customer need
- A single point of contact
The goal is work with large C&I customers who are ready to work with the utilities to develop and commit to customized, 2-3 year, strategic plans and a sequence of energy efficiency actions that are both larger and more comprehensive than the norm. Boston's First Health Care Strategic Energy MOU Aimed at creating more integrated efforts, Partners HealthCare's two year MOU with National Grid will help deliver annual reductions of 70,000 MMBTU and/or 1,200,000 kWh. NGrid support includes on-site energy assessments, lifecycle cost assessments, building benchmarking and building simulations. Project-based, integrated whole building screening of EE measures improves the probability that most proposed measures will pass the utility's cost-effectiveness screening tests. |
Innovative, Transparent, Renewable Energy Financing for Healthcare | Healthcare Renewable Energy Initiative (HREI) for Power Purchasing Agreements Practice Greenhealth, in partnership with Citi Renewable Group, has launched the Healthcare Renewable Energy Initiative (HREI), offering transparent and flexible financing options for non-profit health systems, higher education and municipalities desiring to stabilize energy prices and expand their renewable energy portfolio. HREI has the ability to commit capital, focus on short-term ownership and tax benefits. Their objective is to provide lower cost and better terms than traditional Power Purchase Agreements (PPA), with guaranteed execution, low-cost and certain financing, full transparency, and flexibility on transaction structure and technology, HREI is being piloted in New Jersey and Massachusetts, which have the nation's best subsidies and incentives to enable hospitals to utilize solar power to save money, hedge energy costs and reduce their carbon footprint. Fostering Sustainable Behavior Change | Behavior Change for Sustainability At a May 20, 2011 workshop entitled Fostering Sustainable Behavior sponsored by the Barr Foundation and attended by Cambridge Health Alliance and HCWH, Doug McKenzie-Mohr taught participants the five steps of community-based social marketing: Selecting behaviors, Identifying barriers, Developing strategies, Conducting pilots, and Broad scale implementation. There were numerous case studies illustrating its use. Everything in the workshop and more is in the book, Fostering Sustainable Behavior, An Introduction to Community-Based Social Marketing, by Doug McKenzie-Mohr, New Society Publishers 2011 and at http://www.cbsm.com/public/world.lasso | For a useful paper: Social Norms: An Underestimated And Underemployed Lever For Managing Climate Change Click here |

From the Boiler Room to the Board Room | Energy & Sustainability Managers' Roles Are Changing From the 2Degrees Network (UK): Posted by Oliver Hurrey 6/23/11 "It appears [from participants' comments] that your average energy manager has transformed from just being a "polite nuisance"... to become a critical and trusted voice for the board. Those who simply ran around turning things off and reporting faulty equipment are now developing to become fundamental reports direct to the board-room, that have to juggle legislative and technical expertise with the subtleties of employee engagement... These increasing demands on the energy manager's skill set have meant that there is a growing importance on collaboration and peer-to-peer sharing and validation...in order to navigate the myriad of promises from sales-people and constantly shifting legal and technical sands. ...Sadly the NHS [National Health Service] again prov[ed] an easy target with my favourite anecdote - shared by one energy manager who had previously been a nurse at a major Trust. A hospital ward is cold, the windows are old and poorly maintained and don't shut properly. The answer - stick a bigger radiator in because that's a separate and more easily accessible budget."
