Global Medical Device Manufacturer Moves Forward Removing Materials of Concern

Becton Dickson (BD) is a medical technology company, developing and manufacturing products for the health care industry. In their newly released 2016 Sustainability Report,  they share news about their progress toward 2020 goals of replacing the following chemicals of concern throughout their supply chain:

  • phthalates and PVC from medical devices

  • phthalates, brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and heavy metals from instruments

  • polystyrene and PVC from packaging

These efforts followed customer demand for material transparency in products, which motivated BD to participate in the Chemical Footprint Project (CFP). This project, run by Clean Production Action, helps companies measure and track the total mass of materials of concern in their products. Additionally, BD’s move helps prepare them for European Union medical device regulation that will be implemented in May 2020.

Health Care Without Harm welcomes this news and encourages BD and other companies to continue to use appropriate, safer, and readily available materials wherever possible.
