European Healthcare Climate Summit 2023
The fifth edition of the European Healthcare Climate Summit was held in Brussels, Belgium, in November 2023. It brought together over 70 participants from across the European healthcare sector to tackle the highest-emitting parts of healthcare delivery. The summit featured seven tangible and replicable case studies to address healthcare emissions from buildings, transport, and the supply chain. Read a complete summary of the event in the report below.
Decarbonising healthcare operations
The lion’s share - more than three-quarters - of healthcare’s emissions come from buildings, transport, and the supply chain. By addressing some of the largest sources of emissions in healthcare, hospitals and healthcare providers can take crucial steps towards decarbonising their operations.
Addressing these emissions is not a step that hospitals or even health systems can do on their own - it will require action from across their communities. By leveraging healthcare’s significant buying power (10% of GDP in Europe), healthcare providers can set an example for other sectors.
Participants at this year’s Summit had the opportunity to discuss their challenges and successes in building climate-smart healthcare, and make connections with like-minded professionals, driving collaborative efforts toward decarbonisation of the healthcare sector.
